Bicycle trip in the South West of Ireland 1996
View from the Bronze Age Drombeg Stone Circle ©
Watercolour by Ole Jacobi 1996
On the way from Glandore to Rosscarbery, we made a detour to see the
2000 years old Drombeg Stone Circle, a wonderfully quiet place in the middle
of nowhere, surrounded by fields and cattle. On to Roscarbery which is
situated on a high hill overlooking an estuary. As it was too early to
stop for the night, we decided to skip the town (and the hill) and go on
a bit further. We came past an awfully run-down bathing resort called Owinahinchy
Beach which was not at all tempting, past an enormous caravan camp and
through Castlefreke wood which is part of the grounds of another ruined
castle which belonged to the eccentric Lord Carbery. No B&B here, so
on we went, along a very long stonewall, made of the usual kind of flat
stones, but laid vertically instead of horizontally, a lovely piece of
stone-work. We ended up on the main road going in to Clonakilty, so the
last 6 kms were not at all nice. Clonakilty is somewhat larger than the
other small towns we had come through, and we easily found a B&B in
a town house, Wytch House. The town is dominated by the Roman Catholic
church, while a smaller Presbyterian church has gone out of use and been
converted to a post office.
