Wednesday 5 July 2000

Continental breakfast is offered today, which just means no eggs or bacon. First thing after leaving our Bed and Breakfast is to go to the shipping offices of Caledonian MacBrayne which is the name of the ferry line which goes to the Western Isles where we are heading now. A round ticket from Oban to Barra and back from Stornoway on Lewis to Ullapool on the mainland costs us £65 for 2 persons with bicycles.
After further promenading and shopping, or rather looking around the many shops in Oban selling Scottish mementoes, we board the ferry, "The Clansman" at 2, and depart promptly on time at 2:50. It is not nearly filled up, so there’s room everywhere. We choose the observation lounge with acres of sofas and lovely views all around. At 6 we have a meal in the ship’s restaurant, also fairly empty, and as we get nearer and nearer to the islands, the weather clears up completely. When we arrive at 7:30, it is blue skies all around and a fresh wind blowing. We find our B&B at Nask, a short distance from Castlebay and get a room with a wonderful view of the bay and a very friendly hostess. Also staying, and also arrived on the same boat is a young French couple, walkers, and two Scots girls.
