A Trip to Scotland and the Western

Today the sun is shining from a clear sky, but with a very strong wind
blowing from the north which is just the direction, we’re going. As we
stopped short of Lochmaddy yesterday, we have that much further to go today
to reach Otternish and the ferry to Harris (Leverburgh). It is very
hard work with the wind straight against us through a fairly flat landscape
with no shelter, but we manage to reach Otternish about an hour before
the ferry leaves, with time to have a snack out of the wind in the small
waiting-room.
When the ferry arrives, we find a sheltered spot on deck where we have
a long conversation with a gentleman from Bermuda. How much more conducive
to talking with strangers are ferries than bridges! The going is not too
rough, as the route is sheltered by small islands and skerries which all
have a Gaelic name on the map.
On the quay awaiting our arrival is the couple from Fife who invites
us to tea in their small old stone house which they have personally restored
from a ruin. And then it’s time to find a bed for the night. We are turned
down the three first places we apply to, so we’re getting a bit worried,
as the wind is still very strong and straight against us. Luckily the last
house in the village before the road turns up into the hills has a room
for us, and a turf fire going, and a very nice couple who will do us a
meal as well. It's a lovely old house with many interesting books about
the islands and the Gaelic language, and our host is very informative.
