Wednesday 16 July 2003
It has rained during the night, but after breakfast as we set out on route 13 towards Cavendish, the weather is clearing up. After a couple of kms, we are overtaken and stopped by a van coming from the inn. The driver emerges and hands over a nightdress which we had forgotten - what service!
In Cavendish we're in holidayland and the home of the Green Gables myth with hotels and summerhouses and souvenir shops abounding. For those, like us, who have not heard about Green Gables, it is the setting of a series of girls' books featuring the character Anne of Green Gables, written by L.M. Montgomery in the beginning of the 20th C. The author was born and raised on PEI, and managed to make the place known to millions of readers from all over the world right up to our time, perhaps aided by a very popular TV-series based on the books. It is said that Japanese school girls, who have the books on their English curriculum, flock to the place in great numbers.
At the Tourist Office we manage to find a B&B at Doyle's Cove a little north of North Rustico Harbour, where we go along the Gulf Shore Highway. It's a payroad for cars but not for bicycles, so we have this very good road with lovely views of empty beaches and red cliffs almost to ourselves.
A bath in the clean, cool waters of one of the red sand beaches and a lobster dinner in an open-air fish restaurant in nearby North Rustico Harbour finish the day very satisfactorily.
