A Bicycle Trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island July 2003

Tuesday 15 July 2003
Today we leave our kind English hosts and start out on the Confederation Trail, a trail based on the old railway track from Elmira in the northeast all along the back of the island to Tignish in the northwest. The trail is reserved for walkers and bicyclists in summer, and for snowscooters in winter. It's a very nice way to travel with no noisy traffic, the only sounds we hear are from birds, and at one point from a kindergarten on an outing. The only objection is the lack of signposts as we arrive at a junction of major roads. We missed the trail there and only found it again after a few kms on a very busy road.
At Humber River, we leave the trail and take the road northwest to New Glasgow, where we find very good accomodation at a highway inn. Our evening meal is enjoyed at a combined restaurant and tourist shop with very good examples of Canadian handicraft. It is situated where the Hunter River emerges into Rustico Bay, and offers some lovely views.
