Rossbeigh to Knightstown.

This was a day of no showers and occasional sunny periods. We started off by walking, pushing the bikes up a small road to a pass which led eventually back to the Ring of Kerry. This was one of the loveliest stretches we had yet seen - birds singing in the absolute quiet, the small road winding around small hills, intermittently wooded and grassy. For the rest of the way, we managed most of the time to avoid the Ring, going on smaller roads, except the spectacular places where it hugs the coast and offer breath-taking views of sea and mountains. We reached Cahirciveen in the early afternoon and looked at the town's most interesting feature, the former military barracks. This building has the look of a medieval fortress, while in reality (according to one guide book) it was built to a plan that was originally intended for Imperial India, only the plans got mixed up, and it ended up as a military barracks in Cahirciveen. It now serves as a civic centre with a tourist office.
