Bicycle trip in the South West of Ireland 1996  Courtmacsherry
Courtmacsherry, a view of the waterfront from the other side of the bay                   © Watercolour by Ole Jacobi  1996
We stopped at Peter Wolstenholme's pottery and bought a lovely glazed rectangular dish with a representation of the waterfront, almost obscured by a cloud of white birds which we were told is a common sight at certain times of the year. The next stop was at the bottom of the bay, at Timoleague which has an interesting old abbey to look at. It is a fairly well-kept ruin giving a vivid impression of the abbey as it must have been before it fell into disuse, but somehow spoiled by the very recent burials marked by tasteless plastic flowers and ornaments. Out of the bay again on the other side, we turned inland on the road to Kilbrittan where we found a B&B after one miss at a place with a marvellous view. Generally, it is our experience that people hate to turn you away when they have no vacancies, as in this case, where a very nice woman phoned to the next place up the road and got us accomodation there. It turned out to be a house where the parents had gone to the races for the day, and left the running of the B&B business and the care of a much smaller boy to two teen-age boys who did us very well. Present also was an English couple, a veterinarian and his wife, very talkative people with decided views on the awfulness of all things modern.
