Sunday 9 July 2000

Alas, the good weather from last night did not last, so it’s on with all the rain-gear this morning before starting. The rain lasts all day, growing worse as the afternoon progresses. We take the smaller road along the west coast of Benbecula, where we can keep the sea in our sights, with one small halt for a painting, when the rain lets up a bit. After crossing the causeway from Benbecula to North Uist, we come to Carinish Inn at around one o’clock and are very thankful to get in out of the rain for lunch. Here we meet up again with another bicycling couple, which we have seen on and off since meeting them on the small ferry from Barra to South Uist, and have a long talk. They are from Fife in Scotland and own a small cottage in Leverburgh on Harris where they are heading.
