A Trip to Scotland and the Western
Isles July 2000

Tarbert lies at the bottom of the last long hill, so it’s downhill
a long way before we reach it. We follow the first B&B sign we see
to the top of a hill where a nice retired couple receives us. There’s a
room for us with a minute bathroom which is not "en suite", but down the
corridor, so it’s called, "private facilities", a new concept for us. After
the customary cup of tea with out hosts, we go down to the town centre
which is comprised of one continous row of houses on the main street facing
the harbour, where the ferry from Skye comes in. There are three or four
shops, and in one of them, "The Harris Tweed Shop", there’s a very good
selection of woollies and tweed jackets and masses of other interesting
things, which tempt us to spend some money. Dinner at the nearby Harris
Hotel Lounge Bar and coffee with our hosts who clearly like to chat with
their guests. It’s interesting to realise that they are wholly Gaelic speakers
to whom English is only their second language, as is the case with many
people on the islands.
