Killarney to Rossbeigh.
The day started nicely enough with the sun shining, but by the
time we had had breakfast and were ready to leave, the showers started
falling, as they did for the rest of the day, only occasionally interrupted
by a bit of sunshine. But these rare intervals served to suddenly open
up an otherwise grey and misty landscape, showing marvellous views of surrounding
mountains and bits of blue lake or sea. We started out on the famous Ring
of Kerry, the round trip to the wonders of Kerry, in the direction of Killorglin,
but the traffic was so heavy and the road so wet and full of potholes that
we soon left the Ring and took to the smaller roads. These are in an even
worse state of repair, but the comparatively less traffic makes up for
the holes. After about 35 kms of small roads, we joined the Ring again
at Glenbeigh where a coast road took us to our first B&B at a large
beach, Rossbeigh, with a marvellous view over the sound between Kerry and
Dingle. This was a very new house, apparently built with the B&B trade
in view, having a minute bathroom squeezed into each room, 'en suite' as
it is called. We had an evening meal at a nearby ramshackle fish-restaurant
and pub overlooking the marvellous beach, and obviously meant to cater
for large crowds of holiday-makers and bathers who had not turned up yet
this year. The note was run-down and sad, in marked contrast to the shining
newness of our B&B.
