A Trip to the Isle of Gotland, Sweden July 2001

The weather report last night promised rain all over Gotland, but by some
lucky fluke, we see no sign of it. The trip to Stora Karlsö starts
at 10, and for once we leave the bikes behind in Klintehamn harbour. It’s
a very fast boat, and the trip takes half an hour. On this small island
there’s only one car which is used to bring people’s luggage from the jetty
to the houses around the lighthouse where most of the lodgings are. The
island is known for its rich bird life, and a guide takes us around the
island to show us the vertical cliffs where thousands of birds have been
hatching, and also the rich vegetation, unspoilt by sheep and other cattle
which are banned on the island. It’s wonderfully peaceful here, a joy to
listen to and watch all the different birds.
