A Bicycle Trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
July 2003

At the Tourist Office on the harbour front we find a B&B in another residential quarter of town with an English couple who gives us a very kind reception with homemade wine on the porch of their lovely house. They recommend a good fish restaurant near the harbour, and afterwards we take a walk in the waterside park along with a number of the town's residents who come here to walk their dogs or bike or rollerskate, or just to sit on a bench and enjoy the lovely evening, and perhaps exchange their life stories at a casual meeting of dog lovers.

Another lovely day which we spend as tourists in Charlottetown, taking a town walk guided by a young man dressed in the guise of a man of the 1860s. He's a fount of historical information, especially about the role played by Charlottetown in 1864, when the so-called "Fathers of Confederation" met at the town's provincial legislature to discuss the uniting of Upper and Lower Canada, hence giving Charlottetown the name of "Birthplace of the Confederation". He's also very informative about the various sources of income of the islanders from timber to silver fox fur to lobster fishing, etc.
In the afternoon we attack the problem of our return to Halifax at the Tourist Office, and find there's an airport shuttle from Charlottetown to Halifax leaving every day at 12 which will take bicycles as well as passengers. So that problem is now solved.
